Inside or outside the ticket gate?
Two lockers in the same station behave differently depending on which side of the gates they sit. Of the 698 locations here where this is known, 233 are inside the gates and 465 outside. Outside is the more common case.
When inside the gates wins
- Killing time between trains. You never leave the paid area, so there is no extra fare.
- You will come back to the same station and get straight on a train.
- The station is large and you do not know which exit you want yet.
When outside the gates wins
- You are going out to look around and will come back for the bag. An inside locker would cost you a platform ticket or a minimum fare.
- You are switching to a bus or a different operator's line.
- Someone else is collecting the bag. Outside the gates they do not need a ticket.
The thing people get caught by
Leave a bag in an inside locker, walk out through the gates, and you will have to pay to get back in. In big stations some inside lockers cannot even be reached from every gate. Each entry here records which side it is on and a landmark — check before you commit.
